What is it?

The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon’s orbit crosses the Sun’s apparent path. They are always exactly opposite: the North Node on one side, the South Node on the other.

In karmic astrology, the South Node describes what you already have, what comes naturally, even too comfortably; the North Node, the direction to take to grow. Their sign and house tell you in which areas of your life this passage plays out.

What it’s for

  • Understand your life direction and your repeating patterns
  • Read the nodal axis by sign and house
  • Follow the nodal returns, about every 18 and a half years

Frequently asked questions

Why are the North and South Nodes always opposite?

They are the two intersection points of the lunar orbit with the ecliptic: by definition, they are 180° apart.

What is the nodal return?

The nodes go round the zodiac in about 18 and a half years. When they come back to their birth position, around 18-19, 37 and 56, it’s called a nodal return: often pivotal ages.
